Elvis Presley’s Groovy Rendition of “Beach Shack” (1966)
“Beach Shack” is probably ranks amongst thosethe most forgettable song within Elvis’ 1966 movie “Spinout” and one of the songs that is often pointed to as being a silly song that he should never have had to record.
All the same it’s got a nice little Calypso-style swing to it, but it is the outtakes, takes one through three in particular where the real fun can be found. In those outtakes you can hear Elvis sing “Whatchu think I am? Dum de dum de dum” and you could tell he was fed up and didn’t care but he was just going to have fun with it.
You can hear the smile on Elvis’ face from the second he opens his mouth and he just can’t contain himself thereafter. Dum de dum indeed!! It was the final song that Elvis recorded on 16 February 1966 at Radio Recorders’ studio B in Hollywood, with the fourth and final take chosen to be the master.
